As a hybrid lecture format for all participants, it will not just be an overview, but will also cover more than just general information.
We will conduct a practical introduction that includes case studies from practitioners.
In particular, we will explain, along with innovation frameworks, how to approach challenges from both needs-driven and tech-driven perspectives, how to research existing solutions, competitors, and alternatives, how to generate innovative solutions, and how to think about socially meaningful value propositions.
[June 24th (Wed) 14:00-17:00 Phase 1 - DAY 1 Medtech/Biodesign]]
Based on biodesign, a practical methodology for medical technology innovation developed at Stanford University, this course teaches how to identify truly problem-solving needs starting from observations in the medical field and how to connect these findings to the development of new products and services such as medical devices and digital health.
<Knowledge you will gain>
Starting with the "problems" in the medical field: A needs-based method for identifying issues
Going beyond existing solutions: How to identify unmet needs and validate research findings
What constitutes value that resonates with society?: A way of thinking that transforms needs and research seeds into value propositions.
[July 1st (Wed) 14:00-17:00 Phase 1 - DAY 2 Business Model / Business Plan]
Based on the "Business Model Navigator" framework developed at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, this course will teach innovation methods that combine existing business model types, illustrated with case studies. It will also explain key points for commercialization in the medical device and healthcare fields, particularly focusing on the differences between users and payers, business design considering regulatory affairs, insurance reimbursement, and market introduction, and issues to consider at each stage of commercialization, all illustrated with real-world examples. Based on common challenges and failure patterns faced by medical device startups, the course will teach how to develop research results and technological seeds into sustainable businesses.
<Knowledge you will gain>
Concepts for designing business models in the medical device and healthcare fields
How to develop a business strategy that takes users, payers, and regulations into account.
Key points for business design considering pharmaceutical regulations, insurance reimbursement, and market introduction.
Common challenges faced by medical device startups and how to address them
[July 10th (Fri) 14:00-17:00 Phase 1 - DAY 3 Drug Discovery / SPARK]
Based on SPARK, a translational research support program established at Stanford University to bridge research findings from universities and other institutions into treatments, diagnostic methods, and products used in medical settings, this course will teach you how to comprehensively approach research and development, intellectual property, regulations, commercialization, and fundraising, and how to expand globally. It will also include practical lectures on developing business plans utilizing AI.
